Responding to global crises in medical technology
The lab performs ongoing work in the area of global health to bridge the gap in resources, innovation, and quality of healthcare between well-resourced and developing nations.
In response to the ventilator shortages during the COVID-19 pandemic, we developed the individualized system for augmenting ventilator efficacy (iSAVE). The iSAVE multiplexes ventilators, CPAP and BiPAP machines to safely deliver patient-specific volumes and pressures. Through the Project Prana Foundation (501c3) and partnership with IndVentr, this product has been commercialized in India. (Sci Trans Med, 12, 549, 2020)
Low cost prosthetics
Through collaborations, we also work on affordable prosthetic devices. For example, we work on design and implementation of prosthetic arms with Symbionic. Symbionic is an Assistive technology company based in India – that is building high tech and affordable bionics for people with missing limbs. Symbionic was founded by Rishi Krishna (Inclusion fellow & upper limb amputee) & Niranjan Kumar (Politecnico di Milan) and is one of the few companies in the world that’s focused on building a fully integrated prosthetic arm.
